Timely Comics' "Captain America" may have out-sold the character who inspired Joe Simon to create him. However, toward the end of the Golden Age, "The Shield" certainly outclassed his "progeny." Irv Novick's art, upon close study, is far better than anything produced by the competition. Here are his 1940s adventures reprinted in color from the best source available. Odd that a rather awkward teen-ager named Archie Andrews was the ultimate foe who pushed him into temporary obscurity. He's about to be revived by Archie Comics in a new series after multiple reincarnations in Red Circle, Impact and DC Comics (the most recent written by J. Michael Stracynski, no less). His first rebirth in Archie Comics in "The Double Life of Private Strong" was engineered by no less than the great comics team of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Alan Weiss also did a fine job on his all-too-brief run of "Lancelot Strong -- the Shield," but Novick's still stands out amongst this illustrious line of authors and artists. I'm buying these excellent reprints from Amazon for their fine quality and the fact that the price is right! One caveat, the colorist on the MLJ Comics was far from being a perfectionist, and this does keep these reprints from being as good as their Marvel, DC and Dark Horse counterparts.
