Eliza is a girl of uncommon privilege. Her existence is fueled by her devotion to her widowed father, her dedication to her schooling, and the summers spent at their lighthouse/home, Misthaven. As Eliza enters her 16th year, she senses the changes in store.

Early on, the dialogue of the novel, aristocratic and reminiscent of another era, caused me to question continuing. Before I knew it I was 10 chapters in and growing familiar with the cadence. What initially felt like a foregone conclusion quickly changed and I couldn't put the book down. It was less about finding out how it ended and far more about the journey, traveling in a different direction than where I thought we were going.

I have no idea how long I've had this book on my Kindle or how I missed reading it earlier. I picked it up after work and haven't put it down, even to eat supper. I'm getting book two right now but I must go to bed, so I'll start reading it tomorrow.

Misthaven of Maine edition by Loretta Boyer McClellan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I liked the story however the writing was very flowery. It went on and on describing things that really didn't matter. I wanted to finish the book so skipped through several pages at a time to get to the end. I think this would appeal to younger readers maybe in their early teens.
very good
I must first mention that I love the cover for this book. Amongst the mass of titles, I noticed this one right off the bat. The blurb sounded interesting and when I initially began reading I was impressed by the author's ability to describe the setting and characters so well that I felt like I was standing right alongside them.

I wish I could say that I love this book. I absolutely adore the ocean and just about anything that has to do with it. Unfortunately, the descriptions in this book, in my opinion, were by far the best part. The characters in this book are perfect to the point of being disturbing. When you start out a book with a spoiled child who lives in luxury, you just know that something is going to happen that will change all that and make the story interesting. Guess what? Nope. Absolutely nothing happens. Nada. Zero. Zip. Miss perfect gets even more perfect as this slow story progresses.

I understand that not all novels must have murder and mayhem and sobbing and destruction, but even a single moment of heartbreak may have lent needed credence to this novel. Instead, the perfect world remained perfect and the story slowly progressed to a rather expected end. This book had the potential to be much better than it was.

The other thing that bothered me was the way the main character was portrayed as speaking. The language was much too formal and old-englishy. It ruined the effect for me.

This might be a good novel for a young teen girl as there is nothing inappropriate in it, but for an adult who likes there to be layers in their reading material, this one just fell flat.
A good story
I really liked the cleanliness of the novel. I also liked how the novel moved along. Simply, refreshing and much appreciated.
I was intrigued by the title of this book which got me to order and read it. Being a native of New England, it brought back memories of the coast and the descriptions of the area were right on. It also proved to be a touching read.
A wonderfully written coming of age book that part of it takes place in Maine. The main character has lived there for much of her life and is great friends with Caleb. The book takes place over about eleven years of her life. The best parts of the book are the descriptions of Maine. It does make you feel like you really travelled there.
